Legionnaires,

Department Commander Rodney Strong and I are proud to wish you all a happy American Legion Centennial Birthday tomorrow, Friday, March 15, 2019. In that spirit, thank you for everything you and our entire Legion Family does for our veterans in the State of Indiana. I’d like to take this opportunity to highlight you for both your membership and your time invested into our great organization. By paying dues alone, you help fund the Department Service Office operation, a mission unique to the Indiana Legion in that our professional Service Officers and staff provide benefits guidance and representation to more than 65,000 of the 87,500 service-connected disabled veterans in here in the Hoosier State. This is possible because of dues paying members like you. This, combined with our programs, from Legion Baseball to Hoosier Boys State and all of the scholarship initiatives in between, makes our 100-year-old organization relevant and essential to veterans and their families today.

The American Legion was formed in France in 1919 by members of the American Expeditionary Force, waiting for a boat home. In its first year the legion grew to 850,000 members. The picture below is of the first Caucus of The American Legion there in Paris, France in March of 1919.

Signed, John Crosby, Adjutant, The American Legion, Department of Indiana
